Laura Hartley Better Life and World

My guest today wholeheartedly believes that we can change the world for the better by creating businesses that serve others as well as ourselves. Laura Hartley's core belief lies in this question: How do we create a better life and world?

Laura Hartley is an activist, writer and founder of an online school for changemakers—empowering forward thinking business leaders how to live their most meaningful lives while simultaneously creating their deepest impact.

She teaches ways to build a business beyond capitalism, overcome eco-anxiety, burnout, and how to embody collaborative and regenerative forms of leadership.

Part of Laura's mission is to differentiate between 'business' and 'capitalism'. Business is simply a way to be compensated for our labor and there should be no guilt surrounding starting a business or making money. We all need money to live our lives. We all have bills to pay. Instead of rejecting a business idea outright, instead we need to untangle and separate our business beliefs from our capitalism beliefs to create a more beautiful world.

Michelle also shares her own story about when she realized collaboration is more beneficial than competition and how being in business does not mean 'survival of the fittest'. There's enough room in the world for every business to survive.

Advice for Transitioning Teachers

  • You don't have to change careers completely, unless you're called to do so
  • Think about your intentions and values and those can translate into how you serve others
  • Ask yourself: What difference do you want to make in the world?
  • Think outside the box of new ideas to be of service
  • Teachers have a plethora of skills that can translate into a multitude of careers/industries!

About the Author

I chose to proactively retire from the classroom teaching and share my gifts in a different context. I'm a damn good teacher and I'm tired of working within a frustrating system that won't let me do what I know is right. So I'm taking my business full time -- and I'm still educating, still making a difference in the world. And I want to help you do the same.
